Gotri’s Nasi Bakar and Pancake : Mii review

that day lunch is determined to be projecting to this place named Gotri, located on Ngangel, Surabaya. i’ve been recommended to this place for so many times by my teen cousins. He fallin love with Gotri’s pancake that he sacrificed crossing town to get their pancakes, yes that far.

the menu

So here i am with a BFF looking for tummy filler that one hot day. i got fascinated by the simple yet full of menu menus.

if you have eagle eyes you can notice that there is so many variation on the menu, sssssooooo many that made you dizzy choosing. And once again i’ve been recommended to Nasi Bakar, i pick that for my meal and a safe choice milkshakes as my drink. The price is totally cheap, for air conditioned place, and metal and glass cutlery (i just found my self detesting plastic dinnerware in a restaurant). Price range is around 10.000-25.000 rupiah for food and 5000-10.000 for drink, cheap aight?!

veggie juice and nasi bakar pepes tongkol

those hideous green juice my bff pick isn’t as taste as hideous as it look, i just faound it taste sour and fresh with limited sweetness, perfect for model diet 😛 . She pick Nasi bakar peskol (pepes tongkol) for here meal.

close up of nasi bakar pepes tongkol

once again you a super eyes power to find where the tongkol (fish) standing, because they were more to dusted and finely scattered on the cured rice. they taste good, and full of flavour and a bit spicy, and the came piping hot on the banana leaf wrap.

my safe choice nasi bakar kari ayam and vanilla milkshake

close up look for my nasi bakar ayam kari with lemon grass and lime leaf inside of it

i was pretty amazed by the lemongrass and lime leaf inside of it, since it cheap i wouldn’t expect for the small detail there. but yet it hard to find chicken meat on the enormous succulent rice. But unfortunately my thought-it-safe choice seems to end up tasteless and tasteless, i fell like i’m eating a lump of (well, almost) plain rice, yes, those lemongrass and evertything couldn’t help muct for the taste. they just give kick on the aroma.

gotri’s choco banana pancakes

even though we were full like hell, i’m still and still curios on their best critic pancakes. so i pick this choco banana pancakes from their only two choices.

the fluffy pancakes

served with vanilla ice cream on top and lots of chocolate sauce, this yes-i-admit fluffy pancakes is delicious. even with a full tummy both of us still have mouth to stomach this dessert. the pancakes taste savory than sweet, contrasting with the sauce and ice cream, so it was nice and delectable.

while waiting for my girl to pay for our lunch ( 😛 ), i look around and took some pictures. this place is packed during our visit, some customer event return home because it’s fullness. and the most of the visitor are indeed youngster, couples, but some others i saw are  old couples, family and workers.

the inside look

overall review for this place is NICE! i’d love to come back to try other menu, since they came in enormous variation, yet the service is good and fast. make sure you ask them for extra sambal and pickles, the’ll give you free!

Indofood Festival Pilihan Rakyat, Malang ; Mii review

it’a must photo shoot spot

i made my first solo journey to Malang from my hometown Surabaya (95 km), after driving alone for about 2.5 hours my cousins take me to the food festival held in Malang by big food company Indofood. And well it’s a food fest so eating a lot is definitely must do.

fresh from the oven but fastly became cold due to the weather .

with addition of raisin make this apple pie so delish!

once we walked around the booth, we notice some great baking smell. And yes the Apple Pie booth is upfront and they bake a big batch of homemade apple pie, we must be crazy if not get a piece in hand. with only Rp. 3.000 we get a freshly baked-palm sized apple pie. Made specially with local apples (Malang is famous with they green apple) the sourness and sweetness of the special apple blend well with shortcrust pie, totally worthy. and this apple pie is made by a local young entrepeneur, even i forgot the address and stuff but it’ll easily spotted in Malang.

tiny clam soup with lontong

since it’s very windy (4pm) and cold my body begging for warmness, and after going back and forth around the place i choose Kupang Kraton for my soup of the day. they give my a small stereofoam bowl of soup with 3 slices of lontong for Rp.10.000 a bit pricey for my range (i usually get 7.ooo for a bowl i could never finish). But it taste nice, i noticed they add a green condiment to it and i guess it’s a belimbing wuluh mixture to add tangy and kill the fishy from the tiny clams.

so yummy, but sadly it turned cold so fast, thanks to the Malang wind and weather.

i hadn’t got my lunch and it’s pretty late already, so a small bowl of soup still left me a hole to fill. And i already craving for a ayam bakar since the very moment i saw it. the stacked chicken are so attempting, and well my cousin want it too, so lets get some chicken for dinner. i blame the wind and weather for the less kick on the meal, ayam bakar is definitely best served hot/warm and that is also applied to rice. so when both criteria doesn’t fold together you can always guess the result. but this sweet soy sauce baste grilled chicken is pretty much tasty and fine despite the coldness. And indeed fill my tummy well. so we end the visit with taking picture in every things we thought is a good spot.

but overall festival kecap bango is more festive and merrier than this fest, the food is less and limited to the local vendor and the crowd is also lesser then kecap bango, but the good point is less hassle and queuing.

i give 2.5 stars out of 5

Ayam Lepaas : Mii review

Image

                                                         ayam Lepaas

not the best-good-looking food but give taste that made you ask for more

It’s my friend that bring me back to the forgotten beef corned flavor to my plate. Since our intense frequencies on late night chat, so it’s impossible that both of us didn’t influence one another late nite nibbles menu.

And there she gone “afk” in the mid of our hot gossip, flashing downstairs to the kitchen and wiz up a food later i know is an corned omelet. The thing is she’s doing it quite some times, and almost like on a daily basis, we met around 10.30 pm and around 11 pm i’ll be talking to myself.

So here i am got intoxicated by a an old treat Corned omelet, i’m not a fan of this canned meat since i was a kid. I don’t like the greasy fat smell and taste on corned, i always failed to feel that as a real meat substitute. Well somehow i also missed the taste so much every moment my friend type the word “corned omelet”. So challenge accepted, i need to conquer this packed block pinkish meat.

On my first attempt, i used any material i found on my cafe  office, white eggs leftover from making ice cream, and garlic and salt, that is, and i found that failed giving me the sensation i was expected.

But then on my second attempt, i found that this recipe works pretty much well, but not yet perfected, but still worth to share.

Ingredients:

i used sachet corned beef with chili spiked, and found it not economist, better buy it bigger can next time.

50 gr (1 sachet) corned beef (mine is pronas with chili)

1 clove garlic minced (i took the biggest one)

2 clove shallot minced (i stir fry it first together with garlic until slightly browned and aromatic)

2 eggs

1 scallion sliced

1 tsp curry powder

salt and pepper

it’s need a best ratio to produce a best crispy fluffy corned omelet.

how to cook:

just mix all the ingredient well, pour over a sizzling oil in pan, fry it until golden brown and cooked. Serve with any condiment you like.

since i want to reduce the grease odor, i put a fried garlic and shallot as much as i could, and also curry powder kick the weird odor out.

mine’s end up a bit runny on the center, well…burnt, but crispy on the side and yet delicious. I found dried flat parsley on fridge and just literally crushed it and scatter, and it flattering.

serve it with chili sauce, ketchup, mayo, and topped with (supposed to be fresh) parsley, and don’t forget a bit accompany of carbo (for me is definitely rice) for lunch.

*Attention: this not quite a healthy choices for late nite snack….but who’s mind thinking at 12 pm 😛

Happy cooking and g’luck!

the breakfast menu: Nasi goreng and sausage a la Mii

Image

a perfect day should start up with a perfect breakfast, and like other regular Indonesian i’d love to start it with succulent hot rice, they we’re really made for this tummy.

a perfect nasi goreng (indonesian style fried rice) should be succulent, not soggy, not dry, taste, smell and looking good. But since this one i made during the limited supporting ingredient and supposed to feed a total of 11 peoples, so i made this one with a lot of alteration (like always). and here’s the recipes

Nasi goreng

Ingredients:

4 cups cooked rice (leftover is better)

1 onion chopped

1/2 green paprika cut small

1/2 cup meat balls halves

2 tsp margarine

2 tsp chili powder

2 tsp crushed black pepper

2 tbs chili sauce or more for a spicier one

2 tbs sweet soy sauce

2 tbs soy sauce

1 tbs instant beef stock

sugar, salt, and pepper to taste

how to cook:

Heat a non stick pan over a medium high heat, saute onion, paprika and meat balls with margarine until tender and aromatic. pour the sweet soy sauce, sweet soy sauce, chili sauce, beef stock and stir. Pour the cooked rice and stir it vigorously until well blend. season and taste. Enjoy while still hot. best served with kerupuk udang, chips, omelet, sausage, or fried shallot.

and for complimentary to the Nasi goreng i add a stir fry sausage with herb (just sausage, margarine, dried basil and oregano, salt, sugar, and pepper)

i got confused in between this picture and this…so i upload both 😛

Mii Review : Gado-gado Ria Restaurant Grand City Surabaya

It was a very late lunch and since i didn’t catch any breakfast, i crave for a full course on a meal…Gado-gado is what that describe it all. A lavish meal, with savory peanut sauce over a vary veggies and topped with a nutty crispy kerupuk melinjo. So be it, gado-gado for lunch at a very Indonesian restaurant Ria Restaurant located at Grand City Surabaya.

When my order came, i found it very tantalizing, so mouth-watering (well i’m super hungry, whaddaya expect!) and such a feast on my visual. a mount of hidden veggies and lontong surrounded with hard boiled egg, kerupuk udang, and kerupuk melinjo. without further a do i dig my spoon on it and the sauce is like dripping over my treasure hunt. And when my first scoop landed on my palate it was a burst of flavor, sweetness… savoriness…and pleasure. I somehow satisfied with it. Then this belly get greedy, they’re asking for another scoop of treasure, and so there’s me and arms working, digging more and more scoop to be delivered to my belly.

But there is….something stopped me at 1/2 portion of the meal. i got stuffed by the over bearing sweetness  that occupied my palate, and they’re so somehow off-turning. What i expect for a perfect Gado-gado is savory flavor with a hint of sweetness and a specific taste of herb and coarse nuts.  And somehow it turned out that the sweetness come out playing a bigger role on it’s half  show played  at my mouth.

Then my lunch mate got curious with it, why did i stopped digging on my plate. He taste it and yes the same over bearing sweetness he got on his first scoop. And well we decided that it was a good meal but doesn’t worth another visit.

beside gado-gado i also ordered a Tamarind drink, a sour and sweet mix in a glass. i like it, i’m a type of person that loves the combo of sweet and sour, and this tamarind sourness is a different way of sourness to compare with e.g lemon. And indeed this drink drenching the stuffiness from my over-bearing sweetness meal.

And one thing i love from Ria Restaurant beside it’s ethnic Indonesian nuance is they gives a variant of Kerupuk for free. So if you love freebies, this might be one of the place you’d love to be.

And my lunch mate order is also failed to impress his palate. I didn’t have the chance to taste it (well both of us are hungry and i didn’t dare to ruin a lion’s appetite :P), but he left a significant leftover and decided that he wouldn’t come back for more. Well as far as i’m concerned, his plate is beautiful, full of different kind of condiment and look so promising. But in the end this mouth is the one who eat it all not the eyes.
